Fire 7 has just been released and is definitely the strongest free engine available after Stockfish (and its clones). In my testing, it's the fourth strongest chess engine period after Stockfish, Houdini and Komodo. I used the latest Brainfish for my testing but did not use Cerebellum opening book, so it's functionally identical to Stockfish.

Didn't say that it was, only that it was the fourth best. My results are posted above. It ended a distant fourth but still far better than most any other engine out there. I tested it separately against latest Anscacs, Chiron, Fizbo, Deep Shredder, Booot, etc. It easily won.

Apparently Fire just released a big patch. Fire 7 is now version 7.1 and it addresses many bug fixes listed below. You can download it at the same link at the top of this thread. I tested it last night and it beat Shredder 13 by 82 Elo in 300 STC games.
Significant maintenance release which addresses multiple critical issues:
- losses on time in Arena GUI - loss of communication to GUI while pondering - multi-threading crashes with 'unknown exception' error - freezing/unpredictable behavior due to buffer under/over runs
It is highly recommended to upgrade any previous Fire 7 binaries to this release
